A realistic first year of gas
For a blimp flown regularly: the first fill is about $255, then roughly $2.50 a day in top-offs. Flown most days that is a few hundred dollars across a year, plus any cylinder rental.
For a sphere: one $300 tank covers around two months including top-offs.
If you fly seasonally rather than year round, scale accordingly. A Minnesota owner flying six months uses far less than an Arizona one flying twelve.
The one thing that wastes helium
Topping off on cold mornings. The balloon looks soft because the gas has contracted, you add more, and by afternoon it is over-full and straining.
Judge it warm, top it up warm. That single habit is worth more than any purchasing decision you will make about gas.

A local welding-gas or industrial-gas supplier.
What does it cost?
About $300 for a 200 cubic foot cylinder, roughly $1.50 per cubic foot.
Is there a rental fee?
Usually for the cylinder. Ask on the first call.
Is helium dangerous?
It is inert. The hazard is a heavy cylinder falling. Keep it secured and capped.
Can I use party helium?
No. Wrong volumes and far more expensive per cubic foot.
